Mauvernia/Mauvernia

Mauvernia

¡Mauvernia, Mauvernia! ¡Tierra de los Muertos!
¿Has visto mi alma, muy pálida y bella,
vestida de luto, llorosa y callada,
con hondas ojeras?
La he buscado doquier por el mundo
y no la he encontrado, ¿dónde estará ella?
¿No es esa que pasa bajo aquellos sauces,
sollozando trémula,
como una niñita que no tiene a nadie,
igual que una huérfana?
¡Mauvernia, Mauvernia! ¡Tierra de los Muertos!
¡No abandones mi alma! ¡Que vague en tu tierra!
¡No la dejes venir a este mundo
de lodo y miseria,
a este mundo al que no pertenece,
que muere de pena!
¡Alma mía, habita esa isla!
¡Por piedad, no vuelvas!
Pasea tus hondas nostalgias, callada y llorosa,
allá en la brumosa, lejana Mauvernia!
No vuelvas al mundo,
¡que mueres de pena!

Mauvernia

It is the Island of the Dead, of thoughtful souls
enfolded in white shrouds,
of souls who walk, silent and sad,
weeping their sorrows!
Through an ancient and gloomy castle,
with doors thrown open like great black jaws,
they cross, those souls, with leaden steps,
pale and icy!
Sad island planted with willows and pines
that sway
like sullen ghosts
of vague silhouettes,
while the ocean waves whisper their prayers,
pounding and wounding the wet, black rocks,
with profoundest sadness!
Silence spreads its incense
there, everywhere,
broken on occasion
by the grim laugh,
by the ironic mockery
of a few whitened skulls
that chatter their teeth
and despair!
Mauvernia, Mauvernia! Land of the Dead!
Have you seen my soul, so wan and lovely,
dressed in mourning, silently weeping,
deepening circles under her eyes?
I've searched everywhere in the world.
and cannot find her, where can she be?
Is that not she, passing under those willows,
sobbing tremulously,
a little girl who has no one,
a poor lost orphan girl?
Mauvernia, Mauvernia! Land of the Dead!
Do not abandon my soul! Give her shelter in your land!
Do not let her return to this world
of mud and misery,
to this world to which she does not belong,
and where she will die of pity!
My soul, cleave to that island!
For pity, my soul, do not return!
Walk your deep reveries, silent and tearful,
there on misty, distant Mauvernia!
Do not return to this world, my soul,
where you will die of grief!
